St Petersburg Free Skool

Hello St. Petersburg!

Everybody has something to teach and something to learn, and for this reason, we are looking to establish a Free Skool in the St. Petersburg area. A free skool is a decentralized network in which skills, information, and knowledge are shared without hierarchy or the institutional environment of formal schooling. By stepping out of our traditional teacher/pupil roles, we can strengthen self-reliance and the DIY ethic while creating a better sense of community.

Anyone can teach a class in anything they want. The instructor finds a space in a house, park, coffee shop or local business to conduct their classes, and designates a certain day and time. We all have skills and talents which can be furthered enjoyed by sharing them with the many people who make up our community. Classes could include anything from bike repair to music theory instruction to sauerkraut making! The possibilities are endless! Please contact me if you would enjoy teaching a class, or let me know of any particular classes you would like to see be incorporated.

Free Skool is scheduled to begin in May 2011 with a monthly printed calendar to be found at various local businesses and locations downtown. This calendar will include the classes planned throughout that month, and also other free community-based activities that are offered for everyone's enjoyment. You can contact me through Facebook with any questions or ideas, and I am very excited to hear from all of you!

The aim of Free Skool is to provide an environment that inspires individuals and facilitates the exchanging of tools they need to create their lives on their own terms while enjoying our community and each other!
